A term used in the 12-step fellowship recovery approach to indicate a force outside of the self that is greater than the self.

Although often defined by persons of faith as their particular understanding of God, this term has also been usefully defined as any or all of the sources of external assistance a person finds helpful in their efforts. Some examples of what people have used for a Higher Power include the universe, fate, the power of a self-help group, therapy, or treatment group, the weather, the wind, etc.
