Definition:

The Four-Quadrant Model is a manner of representing various combinations of two different variables in the treatment of co-occurring disorder. This type of model is used to represent the various combinations of mental health disorder and substance use disorders, for the purpose of meaningful discussion, service development and implementation.

The 4 quadrants are typically represented as follows:

I – low psychopathology, low problematic substance involvement

II – high psychopathology, low problematic substance involvement

III – low psychopathology, high problematic substance involvement

IV – high psychopathology, high problematic substance involvement
