According to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Skill Building Groups operate from a cognitive-behavioral orientation, although counselors and therapists from a variety of orientations apply skills development techniques in their practice. Many skills development groups incorporate psychoeducational elements into the group process, though skills development may remain the primary goal of the group.
